The best locations in the Sutherland Shire for Family Photos

If you’re thinking about updating your family photos, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is:

“Where should we have our family photos taken?”

Here in the Sutherland Shire, we are absolutely spoiled for choice. From beautiful beaches and waterfront parks to stunning gardens and hidden natural gems, there is a location to suit every family and every style.

As a Sutherland Shire family photographer, I’ve spent years living amongst and exploring the best photo locations throughout the area, and these five locations are some of my all-time favourites for relaxed, natural family photography sessions.

1. Darook Park, Cronulla

Darook Park Beach is one of the most beautiful family photography locations in the Sutherland Shire. Nestled along the shores of Gunnamatta Bay, it offers calm water, sandy beaches, gorgeous trees and stunning sunset light. The park is well known for its beautiful water views and is a popular location for photography sessions.

What I love most about Darook Park Beach is the sun sets behind the water, as it’s West facing. The light is amazing, and for a private beachside location – it tops them all. Within a 50m short walk, we can capture both family cuddles beneath the trees amongst greenery, followed by beautiful golden-hour portraits by the water.

2. Camellia Gardens, Caringbah

The E.G. Waterhouse Camellia Gardens are one of the hidden treasures of the Sutherland Shire. Located in Caringbah South, the gardens feature beautiful pathways, colourful flowers, lush greenery and peaceful natural surroundings. The gardens are recognised internationally for their camellia collection and are a favourite destination for visitors and locals.

This location feels completely different from the beach and offers a timeless, elegant backdrop for family photos. The gardens look beautiful year-round and are particularly stunning during flowering season.

3. Como Pleasure Grounds

If you’re looking for a location that is relaxed, fun and family-friendly for little one’s, Como Pleasure Grounds is a fantastic choice.

Located on the Georges River, this location offers wide open grassy areas, large trees, waterfront views and plenty of room for children to run around and explore. Como itself is known for its beautiful riverside setting and natural surrounds.

The best family photos often happen when children are free to play and be themselves, and Como Pleasure Grounds is perfect for exactly that.

4. Audley, Royal National Park

If you’re dreaming of a family photography session surrounded by nature, Audley in the Royal National Park is one of the most beautiful locations in the Sutherland Shire.

With its winding river, lush greenery, charming wooden bridges and open grassy spaces, Audley offers a stunning natural backdrop that feels peaceful and timeless. It’s one of those locations that truly showcases the natural beauty of the National Park and creates a beautiful variety of images within a single session.

I particularly love Audley for families who want a relaxed, outdoor experience. Children can explore the open spaces, walk along the riverside paths and enjoy being immersed in nature while we capture genuine moments together.

The soft light filtering through the trees creates beautiful photographs year-round, making Audley a fantastic choice for family photos in every season.

5. Your Own Backyard

My favourite location might surprise you…

Some of the most meaningful family photos I’ve ever captured have been taken at clients homes within their own backyard. Children feel comfortable, parents feel relaxed, the fur-babes can be included and the photos tell your family’s real story.

Whether it’s playing cricket in the backyard, jumping on the trampoline, cuddling on the lounge or baking together in the kitchen, these sessions create authentic memories that you’ll treasure forever.

There’s no pressure, no travel and no need to keep little ones entertained in a new environment.
